After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
(Matthew 6:9-13 [KJV])
HAL'LOWED, participle passive Consecrated to a sacred use, or to religious exercises; treated as sacred; reverenced. Websters 1828 Dictionary
I find it interesting that most churches that recite the Lord's Prayer still use the words Thy and Thine rather than you and yours even though the version of the Bible they use discarded these words as being outmoded English. Another word that I noticed even the new translations wish to retain is the word "hallowed."
When it comes to the Lord's prayer Christians suddenly realize the beauty and majesty of the King James Bible. It only seems proper to address our Holy Father with reverent words that elevate his holiness. The words "You" and "Yours" seem almost vulgar when praying this beautiful prayer.
There are not many words that compare to the old English word "Hallowed" either. Webster might define it yet the word itself seems so particular that it is only used in one sense anymore and that is to attribute a very special and unique presence to any reference of God.
It is only right and fitting that we reserve special language when referring to our God... I believe it is even more fitting that Thee and Thou and Thine are words that have fallen out of use in common English and yet seem reserved to be used only in divine service. To be holy is to be separate from the world and worldliness - to be refined and set apart for special observance.
I have noticed that everyone immediately recognizes verses from the king James Bible as being religious Bible verses. I believe that is good. I believe the Word of God ought to be HOLY and Hallowed, respected and reverenced. I do not see the change in the English language as being something negative against the King James Bible and it's formal English. I consider it a good thing. Something that makes it even Holier and sets it apart even more from the crassness that has become modern English. It sounds reverent because it is reverent. Our language is so debased and vulgar I am thankful to have a Bible that elevates
We are commanded to:
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name;
worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
(Psalms 29:2 [KJV]
We live in a time where those who name the name of Christ casually throw about references to God so casually that they must even use short hand, "OMG" in order to make it even faster to despise his Holy name and they think nothing of it.
Every reference to our God ought to be with the greatest respect, dignity and honor. He is worthy to be glorified.
As we enter into prayer before the Lord we are to address our prayers only to our Father in heaven and our every thought and mention of him ought to be with the utmost sincerity. We ought to protect His name with everything in our beings. We should not allow those around us to profane His Holy name or to use references to Him in vain speech.
It is of utmost importance if you are to be a praying man or woman that the first attitude to exemplify is that of honoring the Lord God with your lips all of the time. Put away the filthy habit of speaking vainly of Jesus or God and give his Name the honor it is due.
O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
(Psalms 96:9 [KJV]
When I quote a verse from the King James Bible even the most worldly immediately recognize it as being from the Bible. Not so with "modern translations" that think the Bible ought to be no different than a Harlequin romance novel or the instruction manual for putting together something from IKEA. The fact that our language has become so common and so vulgar only makes the King James Bible shine and stand out like a beacon.
I encourage others to read, meditate, and memorize verses from the King James Bible. To treat the Word of God as something higher, holier, better than we are. To show us a better way of honor and respect when referencing what is Sacred. I treasure this gift God has given to us in our English tongue. He is showing us a way to give Him greater Honor and Glory. Hallowed be Thy Name!
