" If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water."
Like so many people today, the woman who was getting water from a well was in the presence of the Lord but had no idea He was right there and knew all about her but she was unaware. Today people do not realize that they too are operating and going about their day to day lives unaware that the presence of the Lord is there beside them. They do not know the treasure they are missing nor the satisfaction that comes from knowing Him.
He asked her for a drink of water and she was taken aback. So many refuse to come to Jesus because they are afraid of what He might ask of them. All Jesus asked for was a drink of water and they were right there at the well. She put Him off. He was a Jew, she was a Samaritan. People find a million reasons to avoid serving God. I am an atheist. I am a Moslem. I am this or that and we are simply not interested.
What Jesus said next got her attention. "If you knew the gift that would be yours," her ears perked up. He said, "If you only knew who I am you would have asked and I would have given you "living water." The woman mocked Him. The well is deep and you have nothing to draw the water up with... where are you going to get this living water?"
Jesus told her that anyone who drinks from the water that He gives them will never thirst again but will have everlasting life... they will live forever.
Wherever you are right now, whatever you're doing, the same Lord is making that same offer to you today. Do you see Him? Do you hear His gentle voice?
Respond to Him as this woman did. "Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not"
Jesus offers you living water. He offers you the gift from God, living water. Listen for His voice. If only you knew.
